Exciting News from SAS Foundation!

Here’s your 1000-word article based on the e-waste collection drive at Joy Apartments, Sec 2, Dwarka:

From Waste to Worth: SAS Foundation’s E-Waste Drive at Joy Apartments Hits a Milestone

In a world increasingly driven by technology, the flip side of innovation often goes unnoticed—electronic waste, or e-waste. With the rapid turnover of gadgets, from smartphones to smart TVs, the volume of obsolete electronics piling up is staggering. Yet, amidst this challenge lies a powerful opportunity to act responsibly, recycle consciously, and restore balance to our environment.

Swavalamban Avam Swabhimaan Foundation (SAS Foundation) has always believed that real change starts at the grassroots level. On this note, we are thrilled to announce the success of our recent e-waste collection drive held at Joy Apartments, Sector 2, Dwarka, in collaboration with Attero, India’s leading electronic asset management company. This drive not only added significantly to our annual e-waste collection tally but also fostered community engagement and environmental awareness on a meaningful scale.

A Community That Cares

What made this drive special was not just the quantity of e-waste collected, but the spirit of participation shown by the residents of Joy Apartments. Families came forward with their unused gadgets—laptops, mobile phones, routers, chargers, and even home appliances—proving that every discarded device can contribute to a greener tomorrow.

Spearheading this mission was Jatin Yadav, a passionate first-year BTech (Computer Science) student from Lovely Professional University (LPU). His enthusiasm and commitment to sustainability are reflective of the youth leadership we seek to nurture at SAS Foundation. Alongside Jatin, our core team—Dr. Nitin Saini, Gaurav Agarwal (CSM), Jyotsana Sinha, Arjun Tiwari, and Pankaj from Attero—worked tirelessly to organize, manage, and execute the drive seamlessly.

The Impact: 955 Kgs and Counting!

This single event pushed our e-waste collection total for the year to 955 kilograms, bringing us closer to our ambitious goal of surpassing one tonne of responsibly recycled electronic waste in 2024. From smartphones and old desktops to defunct chargers and audio systems, each contribution was a step towards a circular economy—a system where resources are reused and regenerated rather than discarded.

Beyond the numbers, the real success lies in the conversations sparked and habits formed. Residents who were previously unaware of proper e-waste disposal methods now pledged to continue segregating their electronic waste and spreading the message further in their circles.

Why E-Waste Matters

E-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream globally, yet only about 17.4% is formally collected and recycled. The rest either ends up in landfills or is handled by informal sectors under unsafe conditions, leading to:

  • Soil and groundwater contamination due to hazardous elements like lead, mercury, and cadmium.
  • Severe health risks for informal sector workers who lack protective equipment.
  • Loss of valuable resources such as gold, copper, and rare earth metals.

Every responsibly discarded gadget represents not only reduced environmental harm but also a chance to recover finite materials and lessen the need for raw material extraction.

Youth as Agents of Change

Jatin Yadav’s role in this drive exemplifies how students can serve as powerful change agents in their communities. At SAS Foundation, we actively encourage youth participation through internships, volunteer opportunities, and environmental leadership programs like Green Champion Internship.

Jatin’s proactive involvement—from community mobilization and logistics coordination to educating residents about e-waste impact—highlights how young leaders can make a real difference when given the right platform and support.

The Power of Partnerships

This drive wouldn’t have been possible without the collaboration of Attero, whose expertise in e-waste recycling added credibility and operational strength. As India’s foremost certified recycler, Attero ensures that collected items are processed in compliance with environmental norms, using technology that maximizes material recovery while minimizing ecological footprint.

Such partnerships reinforce our mission to not just organize awareness campaigns but to offer concrete, compliant solutions to the challenge of e-waste.

Building Momentum for a Sustainable Future

This event is part of SAS Foundation’s ongoing environmental commitment under its #EwasteRecycling and #GreenInitiatives verticals. With each drive, we aim to:

  • Educate more people about the dangers of e-waste mismanagement.
  • Create long-term behavioral change in households and institutions.
  • Promote sustainable lifestyle choices that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

What’s Next?

Our journey doesn’t end here. In fact, it’s just getting started. With our next set of e-waste drives planned across housing societies, schools, and office complexes in Delhi-NCR, we’re aiming to:

  • Cross the 1.5-tonne milestone by year-end.
  • Expand youth-led drives in schools and colleges.
  • Launch a digital tracker to monitor e-waste collected and recycled in real time.
  • Encourage apartment communities to nominate “E-waste Champions” to lead regular recycling efforts.

We also plan to conduct workshops on how to identify, store, and safely dispose of electronic waste and integrate e-waste modules into our student internship programs.

How You Can Help

Wondering how you can be part of this movement? Here are simple ways to start:

  • Identify and separate e-waste in your home or office.
  • Host an e-waste drive in your residential community or school. SAS Foundation can help organize it!
  • Volunteer or intern with us through our upcoming Green Campaigns.
  • Advocate for responsible consumption, choose brands that support take-back policies, and buy durable products over cheap throwaways.

In Conclusion

The success of the Joy Apartments drive is more than a milestone—it’s a movement in motion. With committed youth like Jatin Yadav and a supportive community, we’re not only reducing waste but building awareness, changing behaviors, and promoting sustainability as a shared responsibility.

Let’s continue to turn old waste into new hope. Every device donated is one less in a landfill and one more step toward a greener future.
