Driving Responsible Recycling: Lessons from the 22nd E-Waste Collection Drive in India

On 21st September 2025, SAS Foundation marked a significant milestone — the 22nd E-Waste Collection Drive in India and the 8th in Faridabad, hosted at Palm Residency Apartments, Sector 76. What might look like a routine collection activity at first glance is, in fact, a powerful reflection of how communities, youth, and organizations can come together to shape a sustainable future.

Why E-Waste Matters More Than Ever

Electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally, with smartphones, laptops, and home appliances piling up at alarming rates. Beyond just discarded devices, e-waste carries within it rare metals, plastics, and hazardous substances that can either pollute the environment or be rechanneled into the circular economy.

By responsibly collecting and recycling e-waste, we are not only preventing soil, air, and water contamination but also reducing dependency on virgin resources — a step closely aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on responsible consumption, sustainable cities, and climate action.

The Palm Residency Drive: A Snapshot

During this drive, the Palm Residency community contributed an impressive ~73 kilograms of e-waste, which included:

  • 📱 25 smartphones
  • 📞 5 feature phones
  • 🖥️ 1 desktop, 1 monitor, 1 television
  • 🔌 1 geyser
  • ♻️ 17.5 kilograms of miscellaneous electronic items

This collection demonstrates not just the volume of e-waste present in our homes but also the willingness of communities to act when given the right platform.

The Role of Partnerships

The success of this drive would not have been possible without the Palm Residency RWA, whose cooperation and proactive support enabled smooth execution and participation. Their leadership sets an example for residential societies across India on how collective action can create measurable environmental impact.

Equally inspiring were the efforts of our volunteers — Ms. Aayushi Dabi, a student from Manav Rachna Public School, and Mr. Shravan Dabi, an IT professional from Tata Consultancy Services. Their enthusiasm in spreading awareness and rallying residents highlights the transformative role of youth and professionals in sustainability movements.

Beyond Collection: Building Awareness

While the numbers are important, what truly matters is the ripple effect. Every drive sparks conversations — parents guiding children about recycling, neighbors encouraging each other, and volunteers inspiring peers to step up. These moments of awareness form the foundation of long-term behavioral change.

The Bigger Picture

With this initiative, SAS Foundation reaffirms its commitment to environmental sustainability and community development. Conducting 22 drives across India and 8 specifically in Faridabad underscores our belief that sustainable change begins at the grassroots level — one society, one family, one individual at a time.

As technology continues to advance, the volume of e-waste will only rise. The question is not whether we can stop it — but whether we can manage it responsibly, turning potential waste into valuable resources and minimizing harm to our planet.

A Call to Action

We invite more RWAs, schools, corporates, and individuals to join us in this mission. Responsible recycling is not just about disposing of old gadgets — it is about safeguarding the environment for future generations and embracing the principles of the circular economy.

Together, let’s make sustainability a community-driven reality. 🌍💚

At SAS Foundation, every drive is more than just an activity — it is a movement towards a cleaner, greener, and more responsible India.
